Child's Hill Allotment Society

Home Page

For over a century Childs Hill Allotment Site has been a peaceful oasis of green situated just off the A41( Hendon Way) There are 150 plots covering 1503 poles and we have a friendly, cosmopolitan mix of people, of all ages and occupations.

We have a hard working committee of 20 people who represent all plot holders equally and are always on hand to offer help and advice to new plot holders.

Many people don't know where to begin when they take on an allotment. It's a daunting prospect if you have never grown vegetables or fruit before. Don't worry, other plot holders are always pleased to share their expertise with newcomers.

If all this makes you feel that an allotment is just the thing for you please see our contacts page for more information.

Getting Started

Once you have acquired a plot try to get to know your soil, London clay is good at holding water and nutrients but may need work to get it into good condition. Take time to plan what you want to grow, set aside an area for perennial crops such as rhubarb, globe artichokes asparagus and perennial flowers that attract pest eating insects. You may want to install a pond to encourage wildlife onto your allotment and you will need to consider space for a shed or greenhouse and of course an area for a well-earned rest.

As well as joining a friendly community, membership includes a quarterly newsletter, a shop on site which is a treasure trove of gardening essentials and of course the website is always available and updated regularly with news, features and handy hints for newcomers and experienced gardeners alike.
